Other types of birth control- Sayana Press

When many Nigerians think of birth control, the only thing that comes to mind is condoms and pills. Incase you don’t know there are quite a number of other ways to prevent pregnancy. These other options are just as reliable and great for the lazy woman who simply can’t remember to take her pills (*wink*-you right?). We’ll talk about one of them today called Sayana Press.

So what’s Sayana Press?

This is an easy-to-use injection for preventing pregnancy for three months. One shot of this baby and you can do it anytime and every time for 3 months without worrying about whether or not you’ll get pregnant. If you have ever used birth control pills, then you already know you have to take it everyday and for many women, that’s just too much stress. So imagine this, you take this injection every 3 months, so that’s only 4 injections in a year and you’re always good to go.

So you hate injections?

Maybe that’s true, but this is not your typical injection, because it comes with a very tiny needle that is inserted into the skin of your thigh or stomach (just like an insulin shot used by diabetics). Unlike common injections, this small needle  is not as painful as any other injection you used to know and your buttocks are safe.

Are there side effects?

Like every medicine (including vitamin C), Sayana Press also has side effects and the most common one is menstrual changes. Wait a second; it’s not as scary as it sounds. The menstrual changes may include irregular menses at first and later you may not see your menses at all. For many women, who dread their period, this side effect can actually be to your advantage. Imagine spending 3 months without the dreaded monthly period and knowing that you’re not pregnant? Whoop whoop!!!.

So what causes these menstrual changes?

See the hormone in this injection is called Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA for short) and this hormone is very similar to your natural hormone progesterone. Progesterone is one of the hormones produced in extra quantities during pregnancy and we all know pregnant women don’t menstruate. But the good news, is your period will return back to normal some weeks after you stop using this injection. This means this injection’s effect is not permanent, it is temporary and reversible.

Other side effects that may happen to you, is headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort, but this usually stops after a few weeks on the injection. A lot of you have heard birth control makes you gain weight, but this is not true for everyone. Research says that 50% of users stay the same weight while 25% gain a little weight (about 3kg) while 25% will lose weight (about 2.5kg). The fact however is your diet plays a major role in any weight changes (gain or loss) that you experience. If you maintain a healthy low cholesterol balanced diet while using this medicine, then you might not have to worry about any weight changes.

Is Sayana Press safe for every woman?

It might be safe for you, but some women cannot or should not use this medicine. These include women who smoke, are obese, have heart disease, uncontrolled diabetes, severe hypertension . Also, if you have just given birth then wait till your baby is 6 WEEKS old before you can start using this injection. If you have had breast cancer in the past, then this medicine is definitely not for you.
